The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario’s largest hospital amalgamation comprised of seven acute-care hospital sites serving 411,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

The NHS consists of four large community hospitals -- Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines General Site, Welland Hospital Site and the Ontario Street Site in St. Catharines and three small hospitals - Douglas Memorial Hospital Site in Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site, and Port Colborne General Site.

Community:     -Welland - Catchment population – 70,000

Hospital:          119 Acute Care beds (including 15 Nephrology beds), 56 Complex Continuing                               Continuing Care beds, and 16 Mental Health beds. This full-service community                                 hospital provides Inpatient and Day surgery, Maternal/Child services, Intensive                                  Care, 24-hour Emergency service, an Ontario Breast Screening Program. A new                                Emergency Department and renovated Ambulatory Care Centre opened in 2003.                            A new Dialysis Centre opened in June 2008, with 21 Out Patient dialysis stations                          The hospital also operates a 115-bed Long Term Care facility.

- Sub specialty interests represented include Nephrology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology

The practice:               - General Internal Medicine with the opportunity to practice sub-specialty

Call:                            - 1 in 6 with the new position

Department:                - Echocardiograms are read by three of the General Internists

                                    - Endoscopy performed by General Surgeons and one Internist

Ancillary Staff:                        - excellent, fully trained nursing and ambulatory clinic staff

- well equipped Imaging Department, including CT

                                    - General Surgery, Urology and Psychiatry, ObGyn, Paediatrics

                                    Orthopaedic Surgery

Tertiary Care:             - Hamilton Health Sciences Centre - 1 hour away

Qualifications Req’d:  - FRCP(C)

                                    - eligibility for Ontario licence and billing number

                                    - interest in a complementary sub specialty is an asset

                                         i.e. Obesity and Metabolic interest, Neurology, Geriatrics
